Hens? with conditions

by JarHeadTed May 24, 2011 09:16
I have obtained "permission" to get 3 hens and keep them in the backyard.  Fresh eggs here we come.....but wait. Before I can do this, I have to paint a few rooms in the house that need to be repainted and replace a couple of light fixtures that need to be updates plus change out some electircal outlets that are probably 30 years old. Our city's zoning will allow chickens as long as the total number of animals on the premises is no more tha 5 animals.  PLUS (and this was the tipping point) if we have a garden that produces food for consumption and are running livestock, then even though we live in a residential neighborhood, we meet the county assessor's definition of agricultural property and this will lower our property taxes.  The first years savings alone would pay for a new chicken coop. I don't intend to wait until spring long to get the tasks finished but I'm looking at being ready to "host" the chicks by next spring.  I wonder how the dogs will react.
